Traditional Steamed Oysters

What You’ll Need

  • Fresh large oysters
  • Water for steaming
  • Melted butter and lemon

Let’s Get Cooking

  1. Scrub live oysters and discard damaged oysters or shells that do not close when tapped.
  2. Bring water to a boil in a large pot fitted with a steaming basket. Keep the oysters above the water.
  3. Add oysters, cover, and steam until shells open, then continue steaming for 4–9 minutes. Discard any oysters that remain closed. Serve with butter and lemon.

Use a steaming basket and follow FDA shellfish cooking guidance. Recipes are sample content for this website.
